DTLAX Magazine

My lovely neighbors

Believe it or not I still get the occasional “So where do you grocery shop if you live downtown?”
There’s a lot happening downtown.  If you’re still asking where downtowners grocery shop then it’s time for your next exploration of Downtown Los Angeles.
When I moved downtown about 3 years ago I realized it was the first time in my 4 years living in LA that I felt a sense of community, being from a small town in Wisconsin that feeling of community and togetherness was something that I missed.
It’s not just about the hidden sausage place who’s name no one can pronounce or the fact that you can actually get a $3 beer at a pretty fantastic bar but it’s also about the people who are choosing to spend their time and energy in our little community.
The current issue of DTLAX has the first of a new series they’ll be doing of profiles on downtown residents.
I am proud to say that I photographed this impressive group of people who continue to make downtown a better place to live and work.

Renata’s Creperie

October 5th, 2010 § 2

Humboldt County, CA

Renata started serving her crêpes in a food truck years before the food truck craze. There was such a demand for these sweet and savory crêpes that Renata decided it was time to expand her 4 wheeled business to a much needed restaurant where her customers could sit and enjoy these delicious creations, maybe with a hot chocolate served with a dollop of homemade whipped cream or a cup of one of their homemade soup.

Here are a few options from the menu…

Tender Lovin´Chicken” organic roasted chicken, Loleta jack cheese, basil, gorgonzola, onions, tomatoes, chili flakes and créme fraiche.
Crêpe Normandy” prosciutto, mushrooms, swiss and jack cheese, scallions and garlic, drizzled with créme.
Banana Berry” bananas, raspberries and strawberries on a cinnamon butter sugar crêpe with hand-whipped cream and Nutella.

I’ve always wanted to find a restaurant worthy of starting at the top of the menu, ordering #1 and #2 and continuing down on each visit until I’ve tried everything they have to offer. Renata’s would be the place to do it, too bad I live 656 miles away.

FoodPhoto Festival-Tarragona Spain

September 20th, 2010 § 4

I’m very excited to announce that I’ve been invited to participate in the upcoming FoodPhoto Festival that will be taking place in the city of Tarragona Spain. I wish I could hop on a plane and be there for the exhibits, workshops and wonderful food but I guess I’ll just have to keep up with the happenings on my FoodPhoto Festival iPhone application instead.

This festival is about celebrating the world of food and food photography and the discipline and creativity that goes into it. I’m thrilled that my photos will be shared with a group of people who are as passionate about food photography as I am.

I’ve chosen to exhibit a series of images that were a collaboration with food stylist Maelle De Schutter.  My work will be displayed along with 19 other photographers from around the world.

Here are a few images from the series.

The Humble Pie

6 tables and a record player

That’s what it says on their business cards, 6 tables and a record player. The Humble Pie may be small but it’s not lacking anything. Their menu is based on what’s in season and what’s local. The experience is similar to having dinner with good friends; the food is made because they enjoy making it. Play a game of cards, have a glass of wine and wave at the table next to you.
